The accident took place near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday afternoon. The helicopter that crashed was an Indian Air Force Mi-17V5.

This dual engine helicopter is considered very safe. The helicopter was carrying Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, who died in the accident.

The accident took place this morning near the Army base camp at Coonoor on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border in the Nilgiri mountain range. Eleven deaths have been reported from the area, according to locals.

Thirteen people were killed in the crash, the ANI said, adding that the helicopter had a total of 14 people, including four crew members. So there were ten passengers, all of them senior officers in the army.

The bodies of 11 persons including Brigadier LS Leader, Lieutenant Colonel Rajinder Singh, Nayak Guru Sevak Singh, Nayak Jitendra Kumar, Lance Nayak Vivek Kumar, Lance Nayak B Sai Teja, Havaldar Satpal were found here, locals said.
