But getting an Oscar by beating the best artists from all over the world is not easy. Despite working in the southern film industry, A.R. Rahman had done this to win the Oscar.
Born in Madras on January 6, 1967, Allah Rakkha Rehman, also known as AR Rahman, is the real name of AS Dilip Kumar Mudaliar! His father Rajagopal Kulasekara was a renowned composer in Tamil and Malayalam films.
So he loved music since childhood. From an early age, he helped his father in his work. Later, he also took formal music lessons from Master Dhanraj.
However, Rahman’s father died when he was nine years old. At that time, they had to face a difficult situation as the conditions at home were bad.
Meanwhile, he started playing keyboards on stage shows with his childhood friend Sivamani. A.R., who does stage shows to fill his stomach. Rahman later formed the Nemesis Avenue Band in Chennai. Rahman’s fingers move smoothly on instruments such as keyboards, pianos, harmoniums and guitars.
With the help of modern instruments, he is able to create music. While working in the band, he received a scholarship from the Trinity College of Music in London and moved to London for further studies. He studied Western music at this college in London.
A boy playing four keyboards at a time!
A. from childhood. R. Rahman became popular with his keyboard skills. He was best known for playing four keyboards at a time on television’s ‘Wonder Balloon Show’. At the age of 11, he started playing the keyboard with the famous musician Ilayaraja.
Debut in the entertainment world through ‘Rosa’
In 1992, he started his career in music. He set up a studio at the back of his house called ‘Panchathan Record Inn’. He started composing music for commercials and television programs. Released the same year, it was directed by Mani Ratnam’s ‘Roja’. R. Rahman made his film debut. Rahman was honored with the ‘Silver Lotus’ award for Best Composer for the Tamil language film.
The movie ‘Roja’ became a super hit and so did the songs! He never looked back after the success of his first film. He made his Hindi film debut with ‘Rangila’.
After ‘Rangila’, ‘Bombay’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Taal’, ‘Tahajib’, ‘Swades’, ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Jodha Akbar’, ‘Ghajini’, ‘Tahajib’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and many more. Gave music to Hindi films.
What is special is that all his songs in these films became very popular. His album ‘Vande Mataram’ also became very popular on the occasion of 50th Independence Day of the country. A. R. Rahman formed a group of dancers from Tamil films with Prabhudeva and Shobhana. The group participated in a stage show with Michael Jackson.
Music used in Hollywood too!
Rahman’s Hindi songs have also been used in Hollywood. The song ‘Chaiya-Chaiya’ with his music was used in the Hollywood movie ‘Inside Man’, while the music track from the movie ‘Bombay’ was used in the movie ‘Divine Intervention’. In 2013, a road in Ontario, Canada.
He was honored with the name of Rahman. Amazon has compiled a list of the top 100 music albums in the world. The list includes the movie ‘Lagaan’ composed by AR Rahman.
First Asian artist to win two Oscars!
AR Rahman is the first Asian artist to win two Oscars. In 2009, he was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for his song “Jai Ho” from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”.
He is the first Indian to be nominated for the prestigious Golden Globe Award. He has also been honored with 25 Filmfare Awards, 4 National Awards, 2 Grammys and Academy Awards including Padma Shri (2000), Padma Vibhushan (2010).
